Understanding Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are conditions that involve unrealistic fear and worry.

Anxiety disorders are very common - it is estimated that they affect about 13% of the population. Anxiety disorders affect people of all ages, including children and young people.

A young person who has an anxiety disorder is not "crazy" and certainly isn’t alone. Many young people have anxiety disorders, and have feelings of fear, worry, panic, or intense stress that can sometimes make it hard to get through the day. Anxiety can also interfere with things as basic as sleep, concentration, and appetite, not to mention the ability to enjoy life and relax.
