I think the Total Respect training was very good, as a group we got together and worked on people’s problems.
Why did you leave early?
I know you will think that these are only excuses, we do make mistakes when we have to juggle priorities, I should have told every one at the beginning that I had another appointment in my diary. I think I would need about 4-6 weeks notice of when the course is taking place or ideally I would like to be involved in negotiating the dates when future courses are held. I did not realise how important it was for you that we were there for the full course.
How have you used what you learnt from the training?
I became more aware of some of the issues that affect young people. I have learned the lessons around listening and understanding. It was good to engage with young people although I do understand that it must be an ongoing process.
Have you been able to promote total respect training among your colleagues?
Yes initially I did share with others my experiences on the course, I did report to fellow councillors, and promote some of the understanding from the training. It is an on going process. However, it was a really positive experience and a learning curve for me. The action that’s follows is where I would like to put my energy.
What do you have to do to become a councillor?
You can be independent and lobby but I was the chair of a local housing association; I was adopted by my political party, they supported me, after that I was voted for by the public in my local ward.
Would you like to meet with young people again?

Yes it was really worthwhile meeting with you councillor Coles. You are very approachable which helps.
