Council Tenancy

At 18 your social worker could nominate you for a one bedroom flat through Merton Council's Leaving Care quota. It is very likely that you will have to demonstrate your ability to live independently and the responsibility that comes with managing a flat (i.e. paying bills, budgeting, managing your friends etc).

Your name will be added to the waiting list however, there is a long waiting list for these and in some cases you could be waiting for up to  eighteen months.

Once you are offered a property your social worker will help you furnish your accommodation by using your setting up home allowance. You may also be entitled to apply to the social fund for a community care grant. Your social worker will also assist you with this.
